Final update for awhile

All our puppies are gone to good homes! We may do one more litter with Molly next year; we're thinking about it for now.

Hi Dan,

What type of health testing has been done on your poodle and lab? Do you have a health guarantee for the pups?

Both dogs are in excellent health, with regular vet visits and all current shots/treatments. I keep copies of the paperwork from all vet visits.

The puppies do all undergo a wellness check with a vet and have their first shots before any are off to their new homes. New owners receive paperwork from these vet visits. We did not do any specific health guarantees in our sales contracts for our first litter (I modeled our sales contract after ones I received from two breeders). The owners that I have had contact with since the sales have reported that they are great puppies, easily trained, and with no health problems to date.

Thanks for asking. We are thinking about another litter next Spring (2009).

I was thinking more along the lines of "OFA" or "PennHIP" xrays to determine hip laxity and conformation to lessen the chance of passing on hip dysplasia. Also CERF clearance or PRA DNA test for eyes to lesses chances of passing on hereditary eye diseases. Finally DNA test for von willebrands (a bleeding disorder) similar to hemophilia in humans.

Two dogs can LOOK totally healthy and act fine but most of these things don't show up until at LEAST two years old. Some dogs can carry genetic disease even though they don't have it.

Something to think about checking as it is more and more common for doodle puppy seekers to demand pups from health-tested breeding stock (not just dogs that see their vet--all dogs need that, breeding dogs need to prove themselves) as well as a minimum 2 year genetic health guarantee on their pup.
